Weather update: Snowfall warning from police

Wednesday, December 03, 2008, 15:20

POLICE have advised motorists to stay off the roads in the event of heavy snowfall.

Snow and icy conditions are expected to make driving difficult, and people are being warned to be prepared if they must take any journeys.

Les Dyble, Staffordshire Police's traffic management officer, said: "The best advice when severe weather hits is to stay off the road. But, if you are driving, following some simple tips could prevent you getting into trouble.

"When heavy snow falls, we often have to deal with a high number of extra calls and we have to prioritise incidents.

"Our vehicles can be affected by the weather conditions too which, along with the volume of calls, may affect response times.

"Please be patient and only dial 999 in an emergency."

Drivers are advised check weather forecasts and travel information, and if driving is unavoidable be prepared.

Police advise taking warm clothes, food, Wellington boots, a torch and, in snowy conditions, a spade.

Carry a screen scraper and de-icer and clear windows inside and out, mirrors and lights before leaving.

Motorists are also advised to ensure they have plenty of fuel, to drive slowly and leave extra room to stop.

Police have issued a weather warning for the area.
